Next year Subaru’s new 2013 BRZ sports car will enter Japan’s popular Super GT race series where it will compete against the likes of the BMW Z4, Nissan 370Z, Toyota Corolla and even some exotics in the event’s GT300 (under 300 horsepower) class.
No technical details have been revealed although as Subaru proudly boasts, the BRZ GT300 will feature a horizontally opposed ‘boxer’ engine. This will most likely be matched to a sequential shifting gearbox with drive going straight to the rear wheels.
Subaru has competed in the GT300 series for many years, running an Impreza WRX STI from 2005 through 2008, and a Legacy sedan from 2009 through 2011. They’ve never won a championship, but that may well change in 2012 as the automaker switches from the Legacy to the new BRZ.
